The AL-1 is not a brickwall limiter. We spent hundreds of hours extensively listening to brickwall vs non-brickwall and chose non-brickwall repeatedly in blind listening sessions. The AL-1 works retroactively allowing for a brickwall-like experience without the bluntness of a hard ceiling. Setting the output to -0.2 to -0.3dB should prevent any overs you may experience.
Traditionally, stereo-linking can cause the program material to feel collapsed as it is never 'off'. The stereo-linking in the AL-1 is based on phase correlation allowing linking to be dependednt on how 'in-phase' the program material is. In practice, this allows the linking to flow fluidly between percentages of linking (min and max) — giving glue when mono content dominates and width when it doesn't.
The Optimizer works in a dual fashion. The Makeup controls the amount of makeup gain added during the release phase of the limiter. The Lift, is the amount of gain added when the RMS of the program material falls below a certain level, set by the Threshold control.
